|
|
I have Delphi 8 (Delphi 7.1) professional and have found the professional
version to be satisfactory for my needs. I develop with iAnywhere's ASA
9.02 and 10.0 using dbExpress. I am interested in developing mobile
applications using .NET framework.
Does D8 qualify for an upgrade to BDS 2007? The feature matrix mentions an
"updated" dbexpress driver for ASA 9 for enterprise and architect versions
only (not professional). Even though I don't use features that appear in
the enterprise edition, will I have to upgrade to the enterprise version to
get ASA 9 support through dbexpress?
Thanks,
Bill Skelton |

It does, but BDS2007 doesn't exist. As a Delphi 8 customer, you will
be eligible to upgrade to any Studio-level product -- Delphi,
C++Builder, or the Studio itself.

I assume you are talking about Delphi 2007 here? Be advised that
Delphi 2007 is a Win32 development tool only. YOur Delphi 8 projects
aren't compatible with Delphi 2007, since Delphi 8 is a .Net
development tool.

Thank you for the reply Nick. Sorry to be confusing; however, that's why I
need direction.
I am using D7.1 for Win32 (that came with D for development with SQL
Anywhere 9.0 using dbExpress (dbexpasa.dll).
The Feature Matrix refers to "Updated dbexpress connectivity for SQL
anywhere 9" available in Enterprise and Architect but not Professional. Am
I to assume that without the Enterprise version, I can't connect to SQL
anywhere 9? What are the implications of that statement?
I do understand that BDS 2006 comes with D/win32, D/.net, C++ and C# and
that they are different development environments.

My understanding is that Borland's High Performance Native Database
Drivers for dbExpress are licensed across machine level boundaries only
for Enterprise level users. I haven't received my Delphi 2007 Enterprise
yet, so I haven't read the license agreement for CodeGear yet, but I'd
guess it might be the same way.
It used to be that you could use some dbExpress or BDP drivers as long as
your application and the database server were on the same machine at the
Pro level, but not if they were on different machines.
You could possibly still use Delphi 2007 Pro in your Win32 environment
with a third party SQL Anywhere driver that doesn't have a license
restriction like this.

Yes, you'll need the Enterprise version of Delpi 2007 to connect to SQL
Anywhere.
