My sales rep tells me the upgrade is essentially the same as
buying BCB6 Pro, but Borlands product review indicates that
the non-upgrade can hand all the database routines Sql, Paradox,
InterBase etc... The Upgrade version says nothing to that effect.

Question: Does the upgrade differ? Is it lacking the database
objects?

Thanks.

Matthew,

The regular BCB6 Pro and the upgrade BCB6 Pro have the same features and
support the same technologies.

Thank you for the quick response.

Are you familiar with the InterBase tools? I have never used
them. I am upgrading because I need to write a server app that
will take multiple client requests from some kind of database
table (Paradox for instance).

Does BCB6 have the TObject types to pull this off?

Thanks.

Matthew,

Is your last name Grayson? I work in C++ support and just saw your PreSales
case. I'll go ahead and correspond with you here.

Sure, you can have a database server that serves multiple clients. I'm not
sure if you have already gone ahead purchased the BCB6 upgrade. If you
haven't then give the Trial edition of BCB6 a try first to make sure it'll
suit your needs. It's available here and would provide some valuable
firsthand experience:

Since the Trial has the same features found in the Enterprise edition, it
may be helpful to also view the Feature Matrix to see what features come
with what product SKUs:

Okay - what about client connections? I looked at InterBase
today and downloaded v7.1 - it seems to want licensing. Is
this the case across board with all of the DB tools in BCB6?

Thanks.

Matthew,

I'm honestly not sure how InterBase licensing goes... I recommend
submitting an InterBase PreSales case on that. The InterBase guys will be
able to fill you in.

InterBase is the only RDBMS offered by Borland. The actual VCL controls for
working with databases don't need to be licensed. They will work out of the
box.

-YH-

You have been very helpful. Thank you for your time.

I'm waiting for a quote on the product at this time. I
downloaded the trial, but the activation key (reg388.txt) that
was emailed to me is for BuilderX not Builder6. I think this
happened because I downloaded both for comparison.

I expected to get keys for both trials. I will try the Xkey
with BCB6 and see if it works.

I will figure it out and take your advice before I purchase.

Thanks again

Matthew.

Matthew,

The CBX key won't work with BCB6. If you've requested a BCB6 key already,
then give it a few minutes to show up. It might just be lagging a bit. I
just tried registering for a key myself, and the function is working right
now, so it should be on its way. I might have just gotten mine faster
because I'm on the internal network.
