Hey people. I'm upgrading to BCB6 Pro. I'm about to place
the purchase right now, but the rep I'm talking to doesn't
know whether I use the BCB4 install key when installing the
upgrade... Anyone know?

Thanks.

Matthew,

The upgrade should come with its own Serial Number.

Upgrading from BCB4 --> BCB6!... Why?
Didn't you hear that Borland no longer support BCB?
Don't waste your money.

Perhaps because BCB6 is a significant improvement over BCB4, especially
now that the linker has been fixed.

I R T,

If a vendor has a later version that will make me more productive I usually buy it.
Why not? If the money spent will be paid back in time saved and increased
productivity then it makes no sense to stick with the old version.

Right now I see no C++ dev tool for making Win32 GUI apps. Delphi is better once we
remove the C++ constraint. But I like C++ better and also it fits with all the other
work I do that has to be in C++. So I use BCB.

BCB v6 is obviously better than v4 or v3. Why use the older versions? The only reason
I could see to do so is if your time spent on BCB is not all that much time or if
your time is not that valuable.

Also, I'm betting that there will be a BCB v9. My odds are on the order of 60:40. But
with the linker release seemingly motivated by a desire to keep existing BCB users
happy that suggests I ought to up my odds to 70:30.

I bought Builder6 when it came out some years ago, but I still use
Builder5 because Builder6 annoyed me with it's silly little changes of
layout ( Tabbed sections of a file are a pain Wink ). It was also slower
so I was LESS productive. So I have never recouped the expense :)

BCB6 is not even listed on the Borland Shop now anyway .... Only C++BuilderX

I've had all 4 versions - the upgrade from 4 to 5 happened because I was
TOLD by Borland that I would need it to fix problems they were not going
to fix in V4. V5 didn't fix them either so I would have been better
sticking with 4 !!!

I'm not holding my breath Smile
I'm betting Eclipse will have a stable VCL package before Borland stop
faffing around.

Not sure when my opinion changed, but I really wouldn't like to lose
this feature now! It is worth the effort of learning to live with <g>
[At least, if you plan on editting multiple files]

Of course, first you need persuading that BCB6 is a worthwhile upgrade
in the first place...
(We made the switch because we needed the linker patches)

Tabbed sections? Do you mean the grouping of header and CPP? I /love/
that feature and it's something our VS users wish their IDE had.

You have to remove the HDP files from BCB6 since they cripple the
compiler. For a while we ran BCB6 and BCB5 side by side (development
and current release builds) and there didn't seem any difference in
performance.

I know some people regard BCB6 as a step backward but I honestly cannot
agree with that assessment. It wasn't a major step forward but anyone
using BCB4 or earlier is doing themselves a disfavour by not upgrading.
BCB5 users have less to crow about but I'd still recommend they upgrade
if they have money left in the budget.

For one thing IIRC watches did get a major improvement in performance.
Under BCB5 any out of scope watch slowed stepping down to a crawl
rendering them almost useless. In BCB6 you can have over a dozen out of
scope watches before suffering any kind of slow down while stepping.

Doing all the editing in Eclipse now so it does not matter ;)

The copy is still on the system, and the new linker patch may be worth
the change, but I've moved on too far now to go backwards :)

Been through that many moons ago. Bottom line compiling a the same
project with a clean Builder6 project file is slower in B6 than the B5
version when run on the same machine. About 40% slower even on
incremental builds.

Yes moving from B3 or B4 to B6 is worth the effort, but B5 is more
productive on the projects I did try moving which is why I gave up in
the end :)

However since B6 is no longer available isn't this academic ?

Are you sure?
I know that it is unreasonably hard to find, but I just checked and
found it still for sale.

Use the 'search' box and type in: C++Builder 6
Note the two plusses and the space.

This turns up various versions, including new user, upgrades and trials.

The question is whether BCB 6 will make you more productive than BCB 4.
That is a moot point.

BCB6 is available from the Borland online store (http://shop.borland.com/)
but listed under the C++BuilderX section.

I assumed it was some different product at first, but is seems that "Borland
C++ Builder Studio" is actually BCB6?

What's with the "studio" suffix anyway? When did it appear, and does it
actually mean anything??
