Hi,

I am considering upgrading from Delphi 2005 to 2006. I have a medium-large
project which has been converted to VCL.NET and after a lot of time and work
it is very much stable. However, I have encountered some issues in Delphi
2005 which I can simply not work around, such as bugs in the compiler.

Can anyone please advise if this is a wise step? Here's my list of pros and
cons for the update:

Pros:
Delphi 2006 is allegedly (from reviews and posts) more stable and fast
than Delphi 2005
Delphi 2006 fixes some really annoying, showstopping bugs

Cons:
My project is largely stable on Delphi 2005.NET. I don't want to get
started again on working around new VCL.NET bugs.
My 3rd party components are all Delphi 2005.NET based and upgrading will
force me to download and install new versions of them (hopefully, they
exist).
From the little I've heard, Delphi 2006 has its own share of bugs.
Especially scary ones, such as compiler bugs completely preventing the use
of strongly-named assemblies produced in Delphi.NET.

What else?

As you understand, I couldn't care less for non-.NET development, C++,
Delphi Win32, modelling, the Delphi debugger and other stuff which is
peripherial to my daily work.

Best regards,
Arie

You should definitely check on the third party
components before deciding. For me, that would
be the key factor.

Download a copy of vmware workstation trial, install in it a copy of

windows, trial of delphi 2006, and see how your app turns out.

If you use a lot of 3rd party stuff depending on what they ship eg just
source or dcu/bpls you should be ok
