Why doesn't Borland open source VCL? That might just shut everyone up.

they did it already by open sourcing the CLX version.
There is absolutely no hindrance to rewrite it to use
the native Windows API or whatever else.

That would work if they also open sourced the RAD GUI. And they won't.

You don't have to use the IDE to write a VCL application.

CLX and VCL are not the same.

VCL is very much alive and well in Delphi.
Delphi 8 shipped with a version of the VCL for .NET

Why did you think they dropped it?

You don't have to use the IDE to write a VCL application.

True, but that would reduce the value of the VCL to a fraction of what it is
worth in terms of productivity.

When I did use VCL, I had so many problems with the IDE that I stopped using
it and coded the VCL components by hand.

I suspect there are serious problems with patent lawyers if Borland did
this. But even if we got that far, it is not enough.

In addition to VCL, we need all the compiler extensions that VCL uses.
Right now I am much less interested in a revised VCL (V6 works very
nicely for me) than I am in a revised compiler, which will let me use
current VCL with regular C++ code. Open sourcing VCL does not leave me
any better off.

Besides, by some definitions VCL is already open sourced. You get the
full source when you buy the product. Borland has been an Open Source
pioneer since the early days of OWL and Turbo Vision. If it wasn't for
this, OWLNext could not exists as a project.
