Installed BCB6 on my new vaio vista laptop. It installed OK but, you can no
longer access the help files as ms no longer support .hlp files (there will
apparently be a ms download available at a later date to allow them to be
shown). It's a while since BCB was updated and I'm sure I read somewhere
that Borland would no longer be updating it so, is this the parting of the
ways. Are we now faced with having to choose between the lengthy migration
to e.g. ms visual c++ or stagnation?

Have you not looked at the BDS suite yet? That is the present and
future of BCB. It is already on the market today.

I did see that Remy but it struck me that only the BCB6 would be any use to
me and I didn't read about any commitment to continue upgrading BCB. Maybe
I've got this wrong but, I thought it was maybe a sneaky way of gradually
guiding us BCB clients over to Delphi.

BDS 2006 (and also Turbo C++, which is a slimmed down BDS) is the
upgrade for the BCB product line.

No. BDS 2006 includes full C++ support, with up-to-date code editor
and VCL components. I guess you di not read all of the public
announcements that Borland made about C++ when BDS was first released.

That isn't going to happen while I'm around. We're taking C++ very
seriously. C++ users are very important to CodeGear.

I seriously hope that you won't just take my word for it. I cannot
wait until you can try out the next version of our C++ tools. We've put
a lot of work in, and have more to go, but I do expect many people will
view our next release to be a great improvement.

David, are you talking about a new version of BCB and will it be available
seperately (i.e. outwith the BD suite).

I've been looking at what was the Borland homepage. I no longer have a clue
what I want (get BDS or wait for BCB7) or if Borland is even Borland
anymore.

BDS 2006 is what you might informally call BCB7. There is something
new on the horizon though. My personal recommendation would be to buy
what you need for right now. (and if you don't need anything *right
now*, then wait) When you do make a purchase, consider buying support
and maintenance when you do. That will provide you with the newest
versions while it is in force.
Borland is still Borland. (though some might argue the Borland of
today is not the Borland of a decade ago) The exciting thing is that the
division of Borland that created BCB, Delphi, and other important
developer tools has been spun out as an independently run subsidiary
called CodeGear.

Sort of. Yes, there is a new version of our C++ tools coming. The
rest is a bit more nuanced. The C++ tools are a member of the suite
family. (Just as Delphi is) But we have been proceeding in what might be
called a staged approach. The Delphi (Win32) tools are to be released
soon, C++ will come later, and the full suite after that.

David, thanks for the reply. Looking at the Borland products page makes me
feel inadequate as I've no idea what most of the products are about. I'm
also left wondering though why the BDS doesn't even warrant a mention on the
products page if it's such a sublime product.
