OK. So I figured it would be an incredibly easy task to get the worst stinky bugs
(imagine SpongeBob's sundae here)...
Quality Central (QC) *is* the way that you give us feedback on what sucks. So I go
can look at http://qc.borland.com/ where the top 10 voted issues are listed.
Certainly if something stinks *really* bad it must be voted on by tons of people
who run into these issues.
OK, so let's go through them and let's see what we have...
Note: The comments marked AO are my comments/opinions made on the fly, and nothing
else.
4007 Please include source code for all dbExpress drivers - 93 votes
AO - This is probably not going to happen in a patch. It probably requires
changes to legal docs as well. 0-1.
425 Allow procedure and function implementations to be collapsed- 85 votes
AO - This probably won't be in a patch. But it is in C#Builder, so there's hope
for the future. 0-2.
2559 Alphanumeric sorting in project window - 75 votes
AO - This should be fairly simple to fix. 1-2.
3732 Please make dbExpress updates to be available separately from IDE/VCL updates - 64 votes
AO - I think this is done now. I could be wrong. But keep in mind that sometimes
a bug fix for a driver requires a fix in the VCL. 1-2.
3057 Include Source, remove the SourceInt folder - 41 votes
AO - I agree with this one. More source is good. But it's not necessarily easy
to do (internally). Therefore it probably won't happen in a patch. It probably
requires changes to legal docs as well. 1-3.
2378 Incorrect multi-language (locale) support - 39 votes
AO - This is a bad bug, and should be fixed. 2-3.
679 The infamous WITH resolution - 35 votes
AO - This would be a language fix, and as such not appropriate for a patch, but
it could be for the next major release. 2-4.
957 Native Complex numbers and Vector support - 31 votes
AO - Probably won't happen in a patch. 2-5.
2747 Add undo/redo in form designer - 29 votes
AO - This would be cool. Not sure if new functionality would be appropriate for
a patch though. 2-6.
376 Add a way to save and select different project options for a project - 21 votes
AO - This would be cool. Not sure if new functionality would be appropriate for
a patch though. 2-7.
OK, so we have 2 bugs in the Top 10 that could probably be fixed in a patch. BTW, it's
interesting that the 10th issue on this list is only 20% as bad as the #1.
I would like to see 8 more to make a Top 10 list of *bugs* that should be fixed in a
patch before I start yelling in core team that something is really wrong and needs
attention.
That means that you guys need to VOTE, and if you have an issue that isn't in QC,
then write the report and VOTE for it.
So, please REPORT and then VOTE. Then tell everyone else to do the same. Then we
can see what needs to be fixed.
By all means, feel free to reply to this thread with extremely stinky bugs - I need
the QC number for them, please... Then other people can start voting for them if they
agree.
When we have 10 - or at least more than 2 - highly voted bugs we can talk about me
going to core team for some yelling and screaming about a Delphi 7 patch.
Fair enough?
Thanks!

Are you guys going to fix the type library editor? Am I the only one forced
to use Delphi 5 for anything type-library related?

There are only 2 bugs in the top-ten-voted issues period.
The issues that would fill out a Top Ten list of bugs would be 2002, 2584,
2875, 3879, 2614, 998, 2246, and 2774. Mind you, they only have 10 to 15

The problem is that votes have to be split up between enhancements and bugs,
so the usefulness of QC for determining patch content is diluted.

Number of votes per project, area, or user is a different topic altogether. |

Because they may not stink equally to different people. Myself, I don't give
a rat's ass about web deployment. I find duplicate identifier detection more
important. That's why I voted for 1615 instead of 2584. That doesn't make
2584 any better, it just means that I don't find it a problem with the
applications I develop, because I don't use it.

I suspect that few uf us have the time to pore over the list of all the

Hello !
dbExpress has many serious bugs. At first MSSQL driver.
I will not repeat QC#'s here - it was done many times in
dbExpress newsgroup and discussed with R. Theivendran.
As i know at moment many bugs was fixed by Ramesh
(thanks Ramesh !). But from time, when dbExpress became
a PROBLEM for me until now is about 5 months. After
reviewing all bugs, i was able to fix most bugs in 1 week
(i am really sure <g>). That is a reason i put all my votes
to QC# 4007. If there will be more regular patches / updates,
then (of course !) i will move all my votes to QC#'s with bugs ...
Regards,
Dmitry

There are 6,817 QC users. 5 votes each for the Delphi project makes

Only 3,350 votes are used in the entire QC system. Not good.

OK, so we have 2 bugs in the Top 10 that could probably be fixed in a
patch. BTW, it's
interesting that the 10th issue on this list is only 20% as bad as the #1.
I would like to see 8 more to make a Top 10 list of *bugs* that should be
fixed in a
patch before I start yelling in core team that something is really wrong
and needs
attention.
|
I think I did change a little your list, most of them are opened and posted
internally
It is not up to us, but up to you to push it
| Quote: | That means that you guys need to VOTE, and if you have an issue that isn't
in QC,
then write the report and VOTE for it.
So, please REPORT and then VOTE. Then tell everyone else to do the same.
Then we
can see what needs to be fixed.
By all means, feel free to reply to this thread with extremely stinky
bugs - I need
the QC number for them, please... Then other people can start voting for
them if they
agree.
When we have 10 - or at least more than 2 - highly voted bugs we can talk
about me
going to core team for some yelling and screaming about a Delphi 7 patch.
|
What is a level of voting you do need for A/B/C/E to be considered worth to
do?
We might just reassign our votes then
I think so, if analysis will be completed

Certainly if something stinks *really* bad it must be voted on by tons of people

I don't know if I'm representative but after taking 6-12 months off
from the newsgroups I returned and people were talking about QC and I
had no idea what it was. After getting a link I downloaded the
Windows client and had no idea how to use it, search for a bug, get a
list by priority, etc. Furthermore, I couldn't find any concise
documentation showing how to use the thing in what could be considered
a 'common' manner. Maybe it's just me but I'm usually pretty good at
this kind of thing and even often provided tech support for products
I've never seen before.
Maybe 'tons of people' don't even know QC exists and those that do
don't have the time/gumption to use it effectively.

Word of mouth is great but you need to think about marketing QC. I
don't recall ever receiving email from borland about it, no snail
mail, and my (D5) news update thingy has been stuck on 'borland and
microsoft tie the knot' item for an eternity.
I recommend:
- Market QC better.
- Provide some sort of official feedback (could include actual fixes)
for QC reports.
- Improve the client and provide some *quick* instructions for using
it (may already have happened - I haven't looked again since my first
shot).
That combination would make QC snowball into what I think you guys
envision.

Only 3,350 votes are used in the entire QC system. Not good.

If you (Borland) will show what QC works (for Delphi project) by issuing a
updates, then people will start to vote
Right now, it is only "vocal" group (it is how you call it) who vote mostly,
it is a group who are vocal here mostly also.
This happened only if YOU do, not after we do. We did enough, I think
