"[...] Many an eyebrow was raised to ponder how a $49 compiler from an
unknown upstart could run 10 times faster than $400 compilers made by the
pros. Even more eyebrows went up when it was discovered that the upstart
company was making a bundle - more than the pros, it seems - by selling at a
low price in high volume." (Danny Thorpe - Delphi Component Design, p4)

Why bring this up here? It is inappropriate to the conversation and
inappropriate to the newsgroup.

I can see why this post was cancelled as it was fully off topic. And I
disagree strongly with the contents that Frank Andreas de Groot wrote in it.
Never the less, that has NOTHING to do with what Frank posted in this
thread.

The upstart became the pro.

The upstart grew up.
The customers expectations increased.
Cost of development went up exponentially.
Incompetent management and marketing did not help.
If you want to see the current equivalent of the upstart, look at some
of the apps made with Ocaml, using LablGtk as the crossplatform gui
builder. Of course, it is much harder to use than Delphi.

Frank is a sensible Norwegian. Did you expect him to dance to the tune

Good for you Frank ! ( Although I do not agree with everything in your
message, I agree with the gist of it)

Things started to get off topic in this thread about here.
You guys should have carried it to b.p.o-t on your own.
Follow-up set to b.p.o-t

I am a wannabe-Norwegian.

Why is that?

Yeah, but if you sell 1,000 pieces at $100 instead of 100 pieces at $1,000
you may end up with the same price, but think about the future when those
1,000 will become 2,000 while the 100 will struggle to save the $1,000 for
the next version...
