Okay. I've used Delphi and the popular DelphiX components, but now I
would like to learn to write my own DirectX routines, nothing fancy,
just for writing some 2D games.
Can anybody suggest where to start?

I'd start by looking at the DelphiX sourcecode, and the DirectX SDK from
MicroSoft. I think the Jedi project has done some conversions of the
headers, which you could take a look it.
