Hi All,

I need to know, is Delphi 6 stable ? is Delphi 7 stable ? which one is better for core programming ?

We currently work with Delphi 5. We want to upgrade to delphi 6, mostly because the XML support.
We use delphi for low level programming. we need no web services, database enhancments or internet stuff.

We had back experience with Delphi 4 in the past, because it was quite unstalbe.

Although we do not need the features of delphi 7 we might need it in the future, so if it is stable enough we will migrate to it.

This is quite a task because we have about 15-20 delphi stations.

Thanks ahead,
Lior

Definately D7 -- it fixed a number of bugs introduced by D6.

Lior,

I have just recently upgraded from D5 to D7 and am very happy with it. The
transition was a little rough at first, not because of Delphi at all... just
an old dog here struggling with new tricks.

I find it to be VERY solid and stable. No problem. I'd go for it... all
the way... D7. Don't know what 7 has that 6 doesn't... but know that I'm
not having any issues, other then my own with 7...

You could buy D8 and get D7 free.

On the other hand it is well known that you should only buy odd numbered
versions of Delphi. <G>.

I like your thinking!

Have you, or are you planning to move to D8 in any shape or form? It's
really rather good, I think.

Well, i plan to look at it but it is unlikely that i will use it for any
serious programming in the nearer future. .NET is 90% hype, IMO. It
contains a number of good ideas, no argument. But at the moment it is
just another layer of complexity on top of an already very complex
system, requiring more memory, more CPU power, more disk space. It
probably has true advantages to existing solutions in some areas
(ASP.NET, for example), which are of no interest to me. And of course
you tie yourself to MS server tools if you use then (ASP.NET apps will
not run on anything other than IIS as webserver, as far as i know).

I program mostly for a closed group at my employer, the environment is
Win2K and Terminal server, and will stay this way for the forseable
future. Many of the PCs we have in use would not have enough resources
to run .NET apps with decent performance, and our admins would likely
violently oppose any move to install the .NET framework on all machines
(they have enough trouble keeping the current platform running)...

I'm happy for you and I also believe you. I however am quite addicted to
reading old newsgroup articles with the use of Google (that's where I find
most of my answers) and I can only conclude that Delphi 7 is not that stable
as some people might think. I've read so many people complaining about
Delphi 7, heck, some people were even mad and considered giving up on
Borland products. I do think that a lot of these problems are related to
components.

But I also think that one should use some common sense. Delphi 6 needed 2
updates and 3 runtime updates. And until now we haven't seen any for Delphi,
other than a few small patches. Why? Because all was already fixed in D6? Of
course not. Under the hood of D7 a lot has changed. Thinking that Delphi 7
doesn't need a service pack is wishful thinking in my opion. Don't tell me
that Borland has learned form Delphi 1,2,3,4,5,6 and now suddenly did
everything ok in Delphi 7....yeah right.
Just search in Google groups for "Delphi 7 Update" and read how many posts
are related to people desperately waiting for a service pack.
I still use Delphi 6 and I'm going to switch to either Delphi 7 (after a
descent service pack) or Delphi 8 (after a descent service pack).
