|
|
We have an application that's been working for many years in a smaal network (10 machines) just fine.
All begun with win 95 and 98; later some of the PCs migrated to XP except the server with no problem. But now all have Win XP installed and the problem is that only one can access the database at a time. When one user starts the program (no matter who is, even the server machine), and a second one tries to star it FREEZES. No error, just it never starts. You have to CTRL+ALT+DELETE it, close the first one and try again to enter.
Any idea will help us, please.
Thanks

Is the server running XP or Win98. If it is running Win98 try putting
the database on one of the XP machines.

Make sure you have "local share" set to True on all PC's within the BDE
settings.

Bill:
The problen begun when the server migrated to XP. With 98 worked just fine.
Now ALL the PCs have XP.

Bill:
No, it doesn't.
It's an old application working with paradox tables, BDE. Nothing sofisticated, no SQL servers, Multi tier, etc. A plain desktop application.
It automatically checks LOCAL SHARE = TRUE,
All machines uses the same .NET file located in the server, where the whole hard disk is shared without restrictions.
In some tests today, when I execute the program in the server (running XP) and then try to run it in other PC (also XP), the error is the typical FILE CONTROLED BY ANOTHER .NET FILE
But the interesting thing is that actually if I delete all .NET and .LCK files and run the program IN ANY/ computer, the .NET file is always created in the same folder of the server, so there are no OTHER .NET file !!!!!
But, I run the program firs in a "client" machine (it runs OK) and then in the server PC, there are no error message, simply the program "hangs" forever.
Firewalls are disabled in all computers.
Some tips refering configuration in XP, sharing, firewalls, BDE..... ANYTHING!!!
Thanks again

I have never heard of anyone having the problem you describe. Are you
using mapped drives or UNC paths for the NetDir and database
directories?

UNC paths, like: \serverapps
Are there recommended configurations for XP, regarding file access, sharing, etc....
Thanks

Yes.

Nothing that is different from any other version of Windows. All users
must have full access to the data directory and the NetDir directory on
the server.
