I've been told that under RC2 of XP SP2, you cannot run two
applications using BDE at the same time.

This would be a real problem because WordPerfect used the BDE and we
have many customers running our Delphi 5 generated app in conjunction
with WordPerfect.

(I haven't tried to confirm this myself because I don't want to screw
up my development machines by loading SP2 if this is true.)

Anyone know anything more about this? Is this something we can expect
to be fixed in the final release of SP2?

TIA,

XP SP2 has not been released yet, so hopefully it's an issue MS can
address.

I sure hope so. We're already investigating it.

I have heard that the patch is being releases next month. If this is
true then we need time to incorporate any Borland patches and roll
these out to our clients.

The only compatibility issue I am aware of the the inability to run more

than one BDE application under Windows XP SP2. According to the BDE
newsgroup, MS addressed the problem in the latest release candidate of
SP2.

not right now (SP2 isn't out is it)? It could be when it is--but I wasn't
really wanting to wait until then <g>. (We are real close to being done with
the BDE it's just a matter of distributing the app, which with all the Q&A
and legal departments I have to go through, at best it would be 3 months if
I pushed).

There is no way for Borland to certify any patch, should one from
Borland turn out to be necessary, before we see the final SP2.

It makes no sense for Borland to go on a wild goose chase, fixing
something that probably has to be fixed by MS before SP2 is released.

As part of my MSDN subscription, Microsoft UK sent me an XP SP2 beta
two days ago. This was to enable me to test my apps against it to make
sure that they ran OK.

True. But the letter that comes with it goes on to read (inter alia):

"To assist you the CD for Release Candidate 2 is enclosed, this will
enable you to test your applications against SP2 prior to public
release, and we strongly recommend that you do test your applications
as Windows SP2 will be distributed to end-users as a 'Critical Update'"

Now ISTM that a software company would be foolish to ignore that advice.

Yes, it certainly would be foolish of a software company to ignore that
advice. Do you actually KNOW of any software company, that would be of
interest to readers of this newsgroup, who would be ignoring that
advice?

Or, are you just assuming that Borland would not be aware of XP SP2 and
issues it might introduce, and that we would totally ignore those
issues w/o communicating them to MS before MS releases the
aforementioned service pack?

I'll repeat it again: there is far more going on at Borland than ever
meets the public newsgroups. It's rather unreasonable to assume that
just because we don't discuss on our public newsgroups every single
thing we're doing that nothing is happening.

To wit:
<example>
I sure hope you're brushing your teeth, because I have *never* seen you
say anything on this newsgroup that indicates that you actually do
practice good oral hygiene.
</example>

You've made WAY too many assumptions about what I may have intended and
got most of them wrong.
