If Borland did come out with a new C++ product that used the VCL i.e. (BCB
9, CBX w/VCL), how many of you would actually take the risk of being burned
AGAIN and use it?
Not me!

I would certainly trial it and unless there was something seriously
wrong would almost certain get my boss to buy in a couple of copies.
OTOH I would mostly only be using it for maintennance of existing
projects. For new projects I haven't yet decided. Thankfully they are
so infrequent here that I can probably wait until .net has won/lost
before having to choose a new environment.

I'd buy CBX w/VCL support, but not a Delphi-based BCB product. I despise
the Delphi IDE in both its old and new incarnations, which is why I
devoutly hope the CBX bugs will get ironed out. Even if not GUI designer
is forthcoming, a fixed CBX with the new more conformant compiler would be
worth paying for, IMHO.

I know that I should not answer this, but:
I have not been burned by BCB... I have been using BCB 5.0 for years. I have
gotten more from BCB than Microsoft or anyone else had to offer when it came out. It
is fortunate that I have not been bothered by problems some have with it. (I
did evaluate BCB6.0 and have only one or two copies of the professional
version. We have not upgraded our other dozen copies for obvious reasons.)
All the hype here in this newgroup has been, in large, just hype for those with
my narrow scope -- industrial automation. BCB allows us to create everything we
need from reusing C firmware code, to the RAD user interface.
Microsoft still has nothing to compete directly with this, though LongHorn may fix
that problem.
No one can properly answer the question "Will you buy the next BCB?" without
bias. There isn't enough information to say one way or the other. It is stupid
to do anything other than make money now with whatever is most efficient for
you today, and, tommorrow when BCB is out, use whatever is most efficient for
you then.
Suppose Borland BCB 9.0 is the best thing on the market when it comes out. You
hurt yourself if you don't use it.
OTOH, if it is as comparable to Microsoft as was Borlands C# product, then let your
bias be your guide.
Please, only people with interest would be prowling here anyway. You say you
would not... But common, why are you even here?

If it were BCB 9 I would definitely go with it. I don't know what I'd do
if it were CBX.

I would definitely wait two or three month until others have
tried out and posted their experience here in the forum.
I don't have the time to check if all the serious problems of BCB6
have been fixed and if no new showstoppers have built in.
The real problem is that maybe most others will do the same .
Frank.

I don't know if I would use it for a new project, but for existing projects
that have VCL code I probably would.
What if there was a significant change of management or even ownership at
Borland? What if Microsoft bought them out?

I've used Borland for about 11 years and have been burned my all of the many
NON-upgradeable changes that they have created.
So, I think of Borland like an ex-girlfriend...You wouldn't go out with her
again, but you want to know what she's up to.
Borland has become to flaky of a company for me to continue to risk my
career on.
I have since moved to VS.NET.
I don't really like it, but I believe it will keep my career intact and it's
the direction that MS is moving in.
I will always be interested in Borland and their antics, but just like
Boxing, it's entertaining, but I would want to participate.
Thanks

There are far too many good alternatives from serious
companies or serious open-source projects. Why bother with
the silly-ass uncertainty?
When BCB came out, it was the best product out there for
my purposes bar none. But now Java with Netbeans or C# with
Visual Studio are both better for my purposes. The world
has moved on.

I will certainly use it. I use different tools for specific projects. Borland BCB is one of my favorite tool. And i think it will be great if they build QT cross platform library in BCB 9. I will use with please that library with BCB 9. ofcouse QT is not so rich as VCL but anyway it will be very rich to classes as soon as programmers jump to QT library.

I would.
Risk? I think there'd be enough initial upgraders who could report how it worked to
let us know if it was worth upgrading.
If it is an improvement on v6 sp4 then I'd upgrade.
